THE RITUAL OF THE CLAY IDOL

Shih Shu-ch’ing

Translated by John M. McLellan

SHIH SHU-CH‘ING was born in 1945 in Lu Kang, a seaport town in Taiwan. After graduating from Tamkang University in Taipei, she completed her M.A. in drama at Hunter College, City University of New York. She is now living in Hong Kong. Her fiction is often disturbingly evocative in its imaginative treatment of inner states of mind and external environment. Among her published volumes of short stories are The Last Descendant of Job (1967), Gather the Days (1971), One Day of Aunt Ch’ang-man (1976), Sussi’s Discontentment (1984), and Perfect Husband (1985). A collection of her work translated into English, The Barren Years (1975, San Francisco), includes two plays as well as short stories. “The Ritual of the Clay Idol” was written during the 1960s and collected in The Barren Years (1975).
